On October 11th, we traveled out to McHenry County College to co-host a candidates forum with Chris and Laurie Jenner of the McHenry County Tea Party.
For the first time in the history of the Turnaround Tour we hosted this event with local, state, and federal candidates. With a record-breaking 9 candidates sitting on the panel, the audience asked important questions that stimulated valuable discussions among both incumbents and candidates.
Adopting a new format, we first invited Joe Walsh (R) of the 8th Congressional District, and Representative Donald Manzullo (R) from the 16th Congressional District up to speak. Both individuals spoke of the necessity of a focus on job creation, and also touched on the issues the country is facing because of ObamaCare.
The second round of questions was directed at the local race for McHenry County Sheriff. Current Sheriff Keith Nygren (R), candidate Mike Mahon (D), and candidate Gus Philpott (G) were all in attendance for this round. All parties discussed county-based topics such as gun-laws, budgets, and overall safety.
Finally, the state representative candidates were asked to take the stage. Those in attendance were: Representative Mark Beaubien (R) from the 52nd District, Michael Tryon (R) from the 64th District, Robert Kaempfe (D) from the 64th District, and John O’Neill (R) from the 63rd District. When it came to discussion on state-based topics, one of the major dialogues covered the need for government transparency. The overall consensus seemed to be that transparency in Springfield would increase efficiency and honesty in the state of Illinois.
Special thanks to McHenry County Tea Party for co-hosting this event, as well as McHenry County College for their help with the event space.
